    Ben, quite small here but my slasher lp with the convave n flip in tail really calling for some paddle--in adjustments; much more difficult to catch waves then my 98" flat bottom Kai Sallas. Any tips?😊

    Hey, thanks for your explanation, I have a good popup, very fast, without the toes touching the board, but the problem I see with this "shortboard" kind of popup, my feet are landing in the middle of the board, but I can't turn the board from the middle, so I have to step/cross-step back, wouldn't it be much more efficient to use a popup where the back foot remains over the fin?

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 3 дні тому

      Yeah 100% - if popping up in steeper conditions no need to pop all the way through to the middle because we need to engage the tail right away, so I like to say front foot should come as far forwards as about where the hips are placed when you’re lying down and the back foot just a little forward from the fin 🙂🤙🤙

    My experience during my first week surfing proved this information correct. I used a9foot and a 10foot over a few days on a small beach break. Remarkably more success and fun on the 10 footer.

    After 2 lessons I was catching most of the waves , making some small steps fore/aft and making shallow turns down the line. Instructor advised against buying a foam top. Instead she recommended something between 9-10 foot “ buoyancy in the center” wider nose and square tail. The first board you described seems like this style.

    Hi Ben, great tips again. Hope you are enjoying the warm water up nth. I have been wondering for a while how best to plan the approach to surfing waves. Through your great help I have most of the fundamentals and putting it all together to have the right moves in the right part of the wave is my next step. Interested in how you may plan your approach to surfing a complete wave eg do you mind surf on the beach before going out or when on the wave do you plan your next move or think further ahead than that? It is also tricky as each wave is different and you may not be enable you to do what you have planned and may need to adjust as the wave presents.

    Yes it does 👍🏻 I learnt to surf on a shortboard when I was 13 and by the age of 15 I had a friend on my local spot who only surfed longboards, I got myself one and never went back, the glide and calm on the style of surfing is unbeatable to me.

    Idea for future video: check out 17:12 in your vid "Why you're catching the wrong waves." See how you pop up then bring the board around in a smooth turn, kind of pulling it forward? I can never seem to get that to happen. I'm not just talking about faded takeoffs. If you can explain how to accomplish that, you'll help a lot of surfers get into position faster. Thanks.

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 12 днів тому

      I think I know what you mean there!! I think its about quick and precise engagement of the rail and tail straight off the pop-up, then using your body and the fixed point that your board needs to act around - would be great to do something on that really appreciate the suggetsion!!! Thanks Ben. Another informative video. This series on the soft skills is really useful and a great reminder of a few key things to focus on, to help some of us continue to progress in this intermediate stage. I surf a lot of beach breaks in Port Stephens, NSW, where close-outs greet us most mornings 😉. So, the last part of this video was particularly relevant (trying to push through a partial close-out to keep in front of the section). I'm wondering if you have any guidance on techniques for actually achieving the acceleration in such incidences to drive through, or around, the white water to get back in front of it, when it starts to shut-down a little in front of you? P.S. I quite like the music (but I find life is generally better with music). If anything, your whiteboard skills are a bigger distraction 😜 (just jokes, as I know it is not easy, and your scrawlings do add value in communicating the messages). In all honesty, I think a lot of us would be disappointed if the acoustic guitar went. A possible compromise could be to add subtitles (with all that spare time you have), so it can be muted and we still get the message...

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 12 днів тому

      Hey Tom! So stoked its helpful for you! Yeah can definitely think about integrating your above points into a video! Really good thing to touch on especially for those of us with mainly beachies around haha If you don't mind me asking (just very handy for me to have this feedback haha) with the music, whiteboard, and speaking is it all going a bit fast - would it be better to slow things down or simplify the points a bit more? I'm always trying to strike a balance between too much info but not limiting information either. Or is it simply the music and illustrations can be annoying haha and it would be more helpful to have myself just talking through things (or I could work on my artwork 😂) - definitely dont have to respond, but really appreciate the feedback!! 🙏🙏🤙

    • @TomHeadley75
      @TomHeadley75 11 днів тому

      @@BenConsidine from my perspective, the last 4 videos with the whiteboard have progressively improved immensely, to the point where you're now hitting the mark pretty well. I feel you have struck the right balance in terms of pace, detail of information, background music and whiteboard illustrations of key points. For me, the whiteboard has been adding value to communicating the messages, especially these past few soft-skills videos where dynamic diagrams help to portray the points. In these cases, using the whiteboard is much better than if you were to try and verbally describe the concepts without the illustrative support of the whiteboard; we'd be lost! For other videos, the whiteboard may not add value (I'm sure you'll know when and where it is useful). If anything, you could maybe do with a slightly bigger whiteboard so you can fit the shoulder of the wave on there etc 😉 and it occupies a bigger part of the panned-out screen (although your zooming in on the whiteboard works really well anyway). You could edit through much of the text writing sections (headings etc), so you can take your time writing neatly (and spelling 😜) and we don't have to waste time just watching you write stuff. I notice you've already started doing this anyway. Good question about the amount of information and pace of delivery. Hard to find the sweet spot. The benefit of UA-cam videos is that we can pause, rewind and rewatch the material as much as we want, so the pace is not such a big issue for me. In terms of content/information, I personally could watch your videos for hours on end, trying to learn and absorb as much information as possible, especially when there are no waves. This has actually helped my surfing a lot over the past two years. However, I have also learnt that I should only watch one of your videos at a time, before then going for a surf and trying to implement/consider the content of that video (ideally a few surf sessions per video); otherwise it all gets lost and forgotten when in the surf. There's only so much one can take on board and try and work on. In this regard, I also find that 3 key take home points per video are probably the max before it becomes overload and things start to get lost or overwhelming when it comes to implementation. If anything, I try and focus on one thing each surf session (if I can). The challenge for you is the fact that you have surfers of all abilities tuning in and taking different things out of it. Some videos are on more fundamentals which were useful when I was a beginner and a simplified message is great, but less useful to me now. As we progress, then we start focusing on the details and the one percenters etc. As such, you'll never be able to please everyone, but I suppose mixing it up over time will enable people at a range of levels take something out of your videos. One approach could be to continue the "3 part" series concept, and progressively build upon the level of detail and technical ability with each part, from a fundamentals beginner Part 1, building to an intermediate Part 2 and then bringing it all together, finessing the details, in a more advanced final part (for example, this could work really well for nose riding, or cross-stepping, or turning). All easier said than done, I'm sure 😂. Anyway Ben, these are my thoughts. Sorry for chewing up space, but you did ask for feedback 😛. No doubt others will have different experiences and perspectives, but these are my own. Moreover, keep it up and thanks for so generously sharing your knowledge with us all 🤙🏽

    • @TomHeadley75
      @TomHeadley75 11 днів тому

    Great Video. Ben what do you recommend for board sizing. I've ridden everything from 9'0" to 10'0". Never really found the sweetspot. I"m 6'0" 185lbs. Considering a 9'6" 23" 3 1/8'"

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 12 днів тому

      It does depend a fair bit on where you're at. But my general recommendations (like I would use generally for coaching) would be the 9'6-9'8 mark and going a bit wider towards a 23 1/2 I think - where we can find a lot of stability. Sometimes more importantly though can be things like wide point positioning - anything below the advanced stages I find we're really asissted a lot with a wide point in the middle board or 'pill shaped' board - then wide point back for further advanced progressions potentially later on (this is me not knowing you're ability level though haha) - I hope that somewhat helps!!

  • @stevensleeswijkvisser2648

    Tx Ben, great Vid :) Question: what do you do with your feet when paddling in ? I and a lot of other people lift their feet in the air to get momentum. But I'm not sure if this helps on all waves, sometimes the wave hits the feet before the pop up.

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 12 днів тому

      It depends - I usually find feet up IF we're using them correctly to geenrate drive and momentum to be no problems, for people I'm getting to use the toes to press off from on the pop-up ill ensure their toes come onto the board before popping up to set the toes in the right position. In steeper waves where we don't need to generate so much speed and power with the paddle, it would be more ideal to leave the feet lower :)

    So if you would rather catch a wave from a little wider, all those that paddle inside you have priority? Narrr, you see if none of them are making it to the shoulder nobody gets a ride. That's stupid and further more just because you have more speed doesn't give you any more rights than anyone else. Some people think that the next wave is always theirs and some people think they can hate you of the break (especially those 20+ wannabe JJFs). Nar to that too.

    Great point of hunting for the wave and holding so that you end up in the most likely spot that the wave breaks. Love these sessions 🤙

    Do I go straight or when you take off do you do where you take off and that's where the take will be?

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 12 днів тому

      If I understand correctly you can do both! The angled takeoff is easier and will make it so you angle your board before getting to your feet and therefore reduce the likelihood of nosediving, but the straight takeoff will allow you to stay more critical in the pocket, but will mean nosediving is easier so we need to be quick and popping up/turning in the right place and time. I hope thats somewhat helpful!!! 🙏🤙

    Why are you moving your feet when paddling ? Does it help to get more speed ? I always keep my legs flat when paddling. Is it a mistake ? Thanks for your vids

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 12 днів тому

      Hey!!! Yeah it can be confusing haha, good paddling technique is typically legs still, to generate more drive in your paddling for waves though we can actually rotate the body slightly as we pull through the water to generate more power and depth of paddle, and with this we kick the opposite leg which seems to help rock the body to that side of the rail and place more pressure into the chest on the board vs having the legs still. So its definitely something to playt around with - its a progression I give poeple to develop more power with their paddle ONCE their standard padding technique is looking good, we can definitely become limited by never moving the legs in this way haha. I hope thats somewhat helpful!!! 🙏🤙

    At my break people catch a wave then paddle back to the outside and will catch the next wave. So annoying.

  • @breezemalibu8028

    it's simple enough when you're all on longboards queuing up for a nice reefy, but when you've got everything from logs to toothpicks all going for the same beachbreaks and working different different depths depending on how early they can take off, it becomes mad max. i love to ride a fish but that usually means i want the same rolling waves as the longboarders, who can paddle into them a good 10-15 feet further out. even if you've been waiting out there an hour, the chances of a pack of loggers voluntarily letting a nice shape pass through them just for everyone else waiting on the inside are approximately 0. so if you're not bringing foam, if it's a good day at a known spot you usually have to leave your expectations for fairness at the door and grab whatever scraps you can.

    • @JasonForouhar
      @JasonForouhar 27 днів тому

      Yesss, thats typical at my home break , I'm often on a longboard or Glider even in big surf and sit outside a whole bunch of short boarders, ...I always let half a dozen nice ones roll through and watch to see who's taking them ....but after a bunch that nobody catches... I go! ....and I kinda feel like if you didn't bring foam because you cant turn a bigger board and your not catching waves....thats your choice... This rule goes triple in Bali....so many beginners that can't catch waves on short boards out there....I hate to be a wave hog but man if I let a bunch roll through and you aint surfing forget it.

    • @BenConsidine
      @BenConsidine 20 днів тому

      That's true, in an ideal world the longboarders would notice who is holding priority as they're paddling out after a wave and still sit behind until its their time.. But like you said probably not always gonna happen..
